It was a glorious day in London on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, when BuildOUT California joined our colleagues in the UK for a special Pride in the Built Community event hosted by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) at their headquarters which is merely a block away from such iconic architectural/engineering/construction marvels as Big Ben, the House of Parliament and Westminster Abbey.
We were joined by our colleagues at Freehold, Building Equality and LGBT+ in Facilities and Management along with senior executives from RICS, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Landscape Institute and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Discussions focused on addressing barriers for greater inclusion in the Built Environment, increasing the participation of LGBT/Allied businesses and creating work environments that where LGBT+/Allied professionals can bring their ‘whole selves’ to work.
A special highlight of the June 7 program included spending time with Freehold Founder, David Mann, who was recognized by King Charles III with an MBE honor in January 2023 for his work within the LGBTQ Built Community. David and his colleague Saleem Fazal were both honored by BuildOUT California with the President’s Award of Achievement at last year’s Founders Day event held in San Francisco.
